How to answer "Tell me about yourself" in an interview

This question is an invitation to set the direction of the interview. A prepared 60 to 90 second answer makes the rest of the conversation easier.

Present, past, future

Present: what you do now and what you are good at. Past: one or two experiences that led here, with one real result. Future: why this role is the next step.

An example shape

"I coordinate operations for a regional clinic, mostly scheduling and supply orders. Before that I worked front desk, which is where I started fixing our booking process. I'm looking for a larger operations role where I can do more of that, which is why this one caught my eye."

Mistakes to avoid

Reading your resume line by line. Starting with childhood or school unless you are a recent graduate. Going past two minutes. Sharing personal details that do not relate to the job.

Practice out loud

Say it three times before the interview. Time it. A mock interview with feedback helps you hear where you ramble.
