How to compare two job offers beyond the salary
The bigger salary is not always the better offer. Put both offers side by side on the same terms before deciding.
Compare take-home pay, not salary
Taxes, health premiums and retirement contributions change what lands in your account. Estimate monthly take-home for each offer. A free calculator can give you a federal-only estimate; state and local taxes vary.
Benefits that change the math
Health insurance cost and deductible, retirement match (valuable, but not spendable cash today), paid time off, parental leave, and any signing bonus with a payback clause.
Costs of the job itself
Commute time and cost, in-office days, equipment, and schedule. An hour of commuting each way adds up over a year.
Growth and fit
Who would you report to, how did they treat you in the interview, and what would you learn in the first year? Ask to speak with a future teammate if you are unsure.
Ask before you decide
It is normal to ask for a few days, for the full benefits summary in writing, and to ask whether any part of the offer is flexible.
