How to negotiate salary on a job offer politely
Asking about pay once an offer arrives is a normal part of hiring. A calm, specific request is rarely a problem.
Wait for the written offer
Negotiate after you have the offer details. Thank them first and say you are excited about the role.
Know your number
Look up the pay range in the posting if one is listed, and published ranges for similar roles in your area. Pick a specific number you can explain.
What to say
"Thank you, I'm excited about this. Based on the scope of the role and my experience with [real example], I was hoping for [number]. Is there flexibility there?" Then stop talking and let them answer.
If the answer is no
Ask about other levers: start date, signing bonus, extra time off, remote days or a salary review after six months. If none move, decide based on the whole offer.
What not to do
Do not invent a competing offer. Do not make ultimatums you will not keep. Keep everything polite and in writing once agreed.
